Currambene Creek Bridge
The Currambene Creek Bridge project is part of the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, aimed at strengthening vital infrastructure across the country. Located on the Princes Highway at Falls Creek in New South Wales, this project focuses on upgrading the structural capacity of the northbound bridge to support increased vehicle loads.
As a key transport route, the Princes Highway is essential to the South Coast’s economy. Upgrading the Currambene Creek Bridge will improve freight efficiency and help drive economic growth across the region.
The project involves strengthening the bridge’s six concrete piers through the installation of external post-tensioning systems. This process includes fitting steel pipes, high-strength steel tendons, post-tensioning, sealing joints, and grouting—carried out in accordance with Specification B113.
To ensure safety and structural integrity, the northbound lane of the highway was temporarily closed during critical post-tensioning and grouting works to minimize traffic-induced vibrations. The project team also implemented strict environmental controls to protect the Currambene River beneath the bridge.
Key Features:
-
Increase the bridge's maximum allowable vehicle loading from a Higher Mass Limit (HML) Semi Trailer (45.5 tonnes) to an HML B-Double (68 tonnes).
-
The works were completed with a quick turnaround, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic and the surrounding environment.
