Sydney Metro - Mechanical Gap Fillers
Certus Projects played a critical role in improving passenger safety and accessibility as part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, with a particular focus on the Bankstown Line. Our scope of works included the installation of advanced Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) and Mechanical Gap Fillers (MGFs)—key innovations that represent major milestones in Australian rail infrastructure.
The Mechanical Gap Fillers are automated, step-like devices engineered to bridge the space between the train and platform—especially important at stations with curved layouts. These units extend smoothly from the platform edge to meet the train upon arrival and retract before departure, ensuring safe, level boarding for all passengers, including those with mobility impairments. This marks the first deployment of MGF technology in Australia.
As part of the project, we also oversaw the installation of 360 Platform Screen Doors across stations between Marrickville and Bankstown. These doors not only prevent falls onto the tracks but also contribute to station climate control and overall passenger safety. When combined with MGFs, the system delivers a fully integrated and secure boarding experience.
